Abdullah Abdullah, head of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation, who oversees government peace talks with the Taliban, on Monday said the government should refrain from any action that undermines political consensus and public support for the state.

The problem should be resolved through talks between political leaders and people, he said.

Dawood Laghmani took office as new governor of Afghanistan’s northern Faryab province even as the governor’s compound in Maimana city was surrounded by protesters who opposed his appointment.

He assumed the office at a ceremony held at an army base in Maimana city on Monday.
