The U.S. Senate members in the meeting highlighted needs for preserving the achievements of Afghanistan gained in the past two decades, Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement released Saturday.

“They considered the active participation of women in peace talks and Afghanistan’s future as an inalienable right of Afghan women,” it added. “They underscored the women’s significant role in ensuring lasting peace in the country.”

In the meeting, the U.S. lawmakers also said they will “continue to support and help Afghanistan preserve the achievements of the next two decades.”

Afghan women representatives meanwhile called on the U.S. government to support Afghan people—“women, men and the young generation.”

“Members of Afghanistan’s parliament emphasized the legitimate will and aspirations of the Afghan people not to return to the dark days of the Taliban regime,” the statement added.

“They termed the escalation of violence, the continuation of targeted killings, the Taliban’s continued links with al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations a clear violation of the Doha Agreement, and the group’s unwillingness to seek a political solution.”

They called on the U.S. congress members to persuade the Taliban to agree to an “immediate and permanent ceasefire.”
