Progress in political and security situation, peace efforts, U.S.-backed peace conference in Istanbul, regional and international support to peace efforts and a new chapter of relations between Afghanistan and the international community in the post-pullout time were discussed, according to a statement by Abdullah’s office.
On Monday, May 3, Khalilzad, the U.S. State Department’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, visited Kabul, where he met with Afghan top officials and senior political leaders to discuss America’s enduring partnership with Afghanistan after it ends military mission in the country—and to discuss “recent consultations with regional and international stakeholders and the Afghanistan peace process,” according to a U.S. Embassy’s statement.
Ambassador Khalilzad separately met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and top peace broker Abdullah Abdullah, who oversees government peace negotiations with the Taliban.
The visit comes as an Istanbul-hosted peace conference on Afghanistan set to begin on April 24 has been postponed to after Ramadan—Muslims holy month and the Eid-ul Fitr that follows.
It was postponed as reports said the Taliban refused to participate in the summit.
