Unknown armed men on Monday midnight, 12:00am [local time], opened fire at people in a guesthouse in Lalpoor district of eastern Nangarhar province, provincial governor Ziaulhaq Amarkhel took to Twitter.
Five people, including a former member of the Taliban, were killed in the attack, according to the governor.
Investigations were underway, Mr. Amarkhel said.
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.
