In a statement released Monday, President’s office said U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons met with President Ghani in his office where both discussed the Afghan peace process.
President Ghani shared the government’s views and plans for successfully pushing the Afghan peace process forward, the statement read.
The U.N. envoy had earlier met with the Taliban leaders in Qatar.
The visit comes following a Russian-backed conference on Afghanistan peace process called as the extended “Troika” meeting held on Thursday last week and ahead of an upcoming U.S.-sponsored conference which will be held in April in Istanbul.
Violence has meanwhile surged in Afghanistan with the Taliban preparing for their spring offensive.
However, on Thursday, Russia, the host country for Moscow summit of “Troika”, joined by the United States and several other countries called for an immediate ceasefire in Afghanistan during the peace talks in the Russian capital.
In a joint declaration at the end of the summit, the United States, Russia, China and Pakistan urged the warring sides to reduce violence and called on the Taliban to forgo their spring offensive.
