The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has expressed concern over the high rate of civilian deaths in Afghanistan, calling for immediate end to these deliberate targeted attacks.
“These heinous attacks have targeted civil servants, the judiciary, the media, healthcare and humanitarian workers, including women in prominent positions, those who protect and promote human rights, and ethnic and religious minorities,” it read.
The attacks claiming civilians can be considered as war crimes, according to the statement.
The UNSC members encouraged negotiation teams to put efforts for building confidence, “including reductions in violence […] and to continue to engage in good faith.”
“A sustainable peace can be achieved only through a comprehensive and inclusive Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process that aims at a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire, as well as an inclusive political settlement to end the conflict in Afghanistan,” the members of UNSC have emphasized.
It comes as peace talks are ongoing in Doha, the venue for negotiations.
Targeted assassinations, often without being claimed, have recently soared in the country, killing mostly civilians.
