U.S. Peace Envoy Khalilzad Pays Visit to Pakistan

U.S. peace ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad on Monday paid a visit to Pakistan where he met with the country’s Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and other officials to discuss the Afghan peace process.

The peace envoy Khalilzad accompanied by General Scott Miller, the U.S. Commander of Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan told the Pakistani military that Islamabad continues to have an important role in the peace process.

A statement by U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Pakistan said that Ambassador Khalilzad emphasized “the need to accelerate progress towards a just and durable peace in Afghanistan.”

“Ambassador Khalilzad emphasized Pakistan’s continued important role in the peace process, especially to help Afghans achieve a political settlement and comprehensive cease-fire,” the statement said.

According to Pakistani military, “matters of mutual interest, regional security, and ongoing Afghanistan Reconciliation Process” were the meeting deliberations.

Khalilzad’s visit to Pakistan follows his meetings with Afghan leaders in Kabul and negotiation teams from the government and the Taliban in Qatar.
