At least five military personnel and 31 civilians, including three children, who were injured during the clash were taken to hospital, Mohammad Rafiq Shirzay, spokesman for provincial health department, said.
According to the spokesman, some of the victims were in critical health condition.
A statement released by media outlets of the local government said that clashes erupted after Afghan forces launched operation to arrest Habibullah Ghoryani—a local thug in the province. But they faced resistence by men loyal to Ghoryani.
According to the statement, Ghoryani was accused of harassment in Jebrael area.
Local authorities did not disclose whether Ghoryani was arrested, but sources have said he managed to flee.
Nearly two years ago, too, government forces tried to arrest Ghoryani for murder charges but failed.
He was also sentenced to one year in jail for forgery.
