According to a statement released by the department, the route was blocked to trucks loaded with supplies, known as cargo trucks, while smaller cars were allowed only when they follow required measures.
It has asked drivers and passengers to have essential items when traveling.
The Salang Highway is one of the largest highways in the country, connecting Kabul with at least nine provinces in the north.
This highway is closed every year in winter due to heavy snowfall and storms.
