The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced in its report Tuesday that at least 3,035 civilians were killed and 5,785 others wounded in 2020 in Afghanistan.
Anti-government elements caused the majority of civilian casualties, with the Taliban responsible for 46 percent of the total and Afghan national security forces for 22 percent of the total.
The Afghan National Security Council in a statement said in reaction to the report that Taliban are responsible for more than this percentage since they have provided bases for other terrorist groups to fight in Afghanistan.
Taliban insurgents are using civilians as human shields and their houses as shelters, said the statement, and that causes civilian casualties.
The Taliban issued denial to UN’s report, claiming the report was compiled bases on the information the Afghan government has provided to the UN mission.
