House Speaker Pelosi wrote in a letter to lawmakers saying that the commission would be formed similar to one convened after the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on New York and the Pentagon.

The panel will also look at the “facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other federal, state, and local law enforcement,” she said.

She has tasked retired with assessing security needs of the Capitol in the aftermath of the attack.

Based on findings of the U.S. Army Lieutenant General Russel Honoré, who had been tasked to assess security needs of the Capitol in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack, Mrs. Pelosi said Congress must allocate additional funding “for safety of members and the security of the Capitol.”

“It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened,” she continued.

More than 5,000 National Guard troops have been deployed in Capitol with razor wire surrendering it to keep the building guarded following the attack which took place on early January.

The attack left five dead as Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and sought to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory as president.

The troops are expected to remain through mid-March.

Former President Trump was acquitted by the Senate on the fifth day of his impeachment trial on a charge of inciting violence.

He was impeached by Republicans last month on a charge of “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the deadly attack on the Capitol on January 6.
