In a statement, media outlets of provincial police in Afghanistan’s western Herat province said Sayed Agha Mia Odrani, who was said to be former head of people’s council in the province, was killed by unidentified men Sunday evening.
Assailants attacked Sayed Agha using a machete, according to the statement, adding he was severely injured. He lost the battle for his life while being taken to hospital, he added.
Investigations to hunt down perpetrators were under way, provincial police said.
Afghanistan already gripped with decades-long war has been witnessing a rise in killings and assassinations targeting journalists, representatives from the civil society, clerics and/or government officials, often unclaimed.
But the Afghan government have constantly pointed the blame at the Taliban.
