Naeem Wardak, a Taliban spokesman, said Tuesday Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the political deputy chief and head of the group’s Qatar-based office, with his accompanying delegation had arrived to Iran on its official invitation.
“Today, the Political deputy of the IEA and Head of the Political office, Mullah Baradar Akhand, and the accompanying delegation arrived into Iran at the official invitation of the State of Iran” the spokesman took to Twitter.
The Taliban delegation is set to meet Iranian officials to discuss bilateral ties between Afghanistan and Iran, according to Mr. Wardak.
The situation of Afghan refugees in the neighboring country and the political as well as security situation in Afghanistan and in the region would also be the meeting deliberations, he continued.
The visit follows President Ghani’s remarks at cabinet meeting on Monday, where he welcomed the U.S. new administration’s announcement that it would review the peace deal the Trump administration signed with Taliban on late February last year.
President Ghani said at the meeting the Biden administration would review the agreement with the Taliban and would then consult with the Afghan government for a roadmap toward mutual interests.
