Coronavirus in Afghanistan: Total Infections Approach 54,000

The Afghan health ministry announced Thursday (January 14) that the country has registered 53,831 coronavirus cases and a total of 2,324 deaths since the outbreak entered the country.

Of the total 1,802 suspected cases processed, 57 tests came back positive.

In the last 24 hours, 57 more people tested positive for the highly contagious coronavirus, and 14 additional patients died after contracting it, a tally by the Afghan health ministry indicated.

Another statistic was also on rise: the number of patients recovered from the illness. According to health ministry data, the recovery toll has hit 45,105 after 295 patients got better during the last 24 hours.

At least 1,976,793 people worldwide have died from COVID-19 and more than 92 million have been infected by the virus that causes it, following an outbreak that started in Wuhan, China, in early December.
