Afghanistan’s President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has ordered security authorities to find and hold to account those behind recent targeted attacks on civil society activists, figures in the political spectrum and other civilians.

President Ghani’s office announced in a statement Saturday that he had ordered security and defense authorities to ensure security for civilians, particularly for the activists.

A surge of targeted killings and assassinations has gripped Afghanistan, and violence has dramatically increased in recent weeks.

Those being targeted are mostly journalists, women rights activists, representatives from the civil society, peace and democracy advocates and figures from all rights spectrum.

At most recent, Freshta Kohistani, a women’s rights activist and her brother came under armed attack Thursday evening.

A day earlier, Yousef Rasheed, the Executive Director of Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan (FEFA) was shot and killed by unknown armed men in Afghan capital Kabul.
