“Civil society activists, journalists, health workers, parliamentarians […] all work to promote and defend democracy in Afghanistan,” tweeted the embassy.
“They are vital [for] bringing the [Afghan] people the peace they deserve,” said the embassy in a tweet, warning “targeting and killing them is unacceptable” and “must stop.”
It also condemned recent attacks which targeted journalists, activists from the civil society as well as the assassination of Yousef Rasheed, head of Afghanistan’s election monitoring group.
A surge of targeted killings and assassinations has gripped Afghanistan, and violence has dramatically increased in recent weeks.
Those being targeted are mostly journalists, women rights activists, representatives from the civil society, peace and democracy advocates and figures from all rights spectrum.
At most recent, Freshta Kohistani, a women’s rights activist and her brother came under armed attack Thursday evening.
A day earlier, Yousef Rasheed, the Executive Director of Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan (FEFA) was shot and killed by unknown armed men in Afghan capital Kabul.
