After FDA’s approval on Friday, Moderna has become the second vaccine after Pfizer/BioNTech’s to be used for COVID-19 protection.

The agency has also approved the U.S. government plans to distribute almost 5.9 million doses of Moderna’s vaccine to 64 states, territories and major cities across the nation by next week.

U.S. President Donald Trump said in a tweet: “Congratulations, the Moderna vaccine is now available!”

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of a country with the highest number of COVID-19 cases earlier on December 11 approved Pfizer/BioNtech’s vaccine for emergency use—the first drug to get a green light from the agency.

President Trump in a video posted on Twitter on Friday night lauded the vaccine as “one of the greatest scientific accomplishments in history”, adding the first dose would be administered in less than 24 hours.

The United States has 17.4 million cases, followed by India with more than 10 million and Brazil with 7.1 million cases.
