U.S. Peace Envoy Khalilzad Pays Visit to Pakistan

U.S. peace ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad paid a visit to Pakistan Monday where he met with the country’s Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The peace envoy Khalilzad was accompanied by General Scott Miller, the U.S. Commander of Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan. 

Regional security situation with particular reference to the Afghan peace process was discussed during the meeting, according to a statement by Pakistan’s military.

Pakistan’s Bajwa assured the U.S. officials that his country will continue to play its “positive role” in advancing peace and stability in the region.

At the same time on Monday, the U.S. special envoy for the Afghan peace called on negotiation teams of the government and the Taliban to resume next rounds of the intra-Afghan peace talks without any delay.

“Given how much is at stake, it is imperative that there is no delays in resumption of talks and they must resume on Jan 5 as agreed,” he said.
