Taliban fighters stormed security outposts in Alisheng district of Laghman province Sunday evening, but the attack was fended off, Asadullah Dawlatzai, spokesman for the provincial governor said.
According to the spokesman, a key member of the group, named Abdul Malik, was killed and many more wounded during clashes.
At least two government soldiers were slightly wounded, said the source.
At the same time, a mortar shell was fired by the Taliban and hit a residential house, killing at least three members of a family and injuring another nine, the spokesman added.
The government officials pointed blame at the Taliban, but the group has yet to comment.
