Afghanistan Cabinet: 6 Minister-Designates Secure Votes of Confidence

Afghanistan’s Wolesi Jirga or Lower House of Parliament Monday passed votes of confidence to six minister-designates and head of National Security Directorate.

Securing 220 votes of confidence, Ahmad Zia Siraj, was approved to be head of Afghan intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security.

The list of minister nominees who secured votes of confidence is as following:

Mohammad Haroon Chakhansuri secured 154 votes of confidence from the Afghan Parliament, approving him to be the Minister of Mines and Petroleum.

Anwar ul-Haq Ahadi secured 189 votes of confidence from the Afghan Parliament, approving him to be the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock.

Noor Rahman Akhlaqi secured 165 votes of confidence from the Afghan Parliament, approving him to be the Minister of Repatriation and Refugees. He initially secured 176, but his votes were recounted.

Qudratullah Zaki secured 165 votes of confidence from the Afghan Parliament, approving him to be the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation.

Mahmoud Karzai secured 154 votes of confidence from the Afghan Parliament, approving him to be the Minister of Urban Development and Land.

Najibullah Yameen secured 149 votes of confidence from the Afghan Parliament, approving him as Minister of Public Works.

There were however minister-designates who failed to secure enough votes.  

Mohammad Tahir Zuhair secured 78 out of 123 votes of confidence needed to secure from the Afghan Parliament to be the Minister of Information and Culture.

Hasina Safi also did not secure enough votes of confidence from the Afghan Parliament. After recount, she secured 119 out of 123 votes needed to approve her as Minister of Women’s Affairs.
