The Afghan spy agency National Directorate of Security (NDS) announced late on Tuesday evening that Mohammad Hanif, who was called Abdullah, one of the leaders of al-Qaeda for the Indian subcontinent, has been killed by its forces in Bakwa district of western Farah province.
According the NDS’ statement, the al-Qaeda leader held a Pakistani citizenship, adding another two women—also Pakistani citizens—were captured alive.
The intelligence agency further added that Mohammad Hanif had been a member of the Taliban group since 2010 but later joined al-Qaeda.
Under a peace pact the United States inked with the Taliban on late February, foreign forces have to leave Afghanistan by May 2021 in exchange for counterterrorism guarantees from the Taliban and never letting the country become again a safe haven for terrorism.
There has been a spike in violence between Taliban and Afghan forces in the country recently despite negotiators from the two warring sides have already begun peace talks in Doha to end the decades-long war in Afghanistan.
