Speaking to BBC, the World Health Organization (WHO)’s spokeswoman Dr. Margaret Harris said France, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands and Russia have registered the majority of cases.
“The concern… is that intensive care units in hospitals are now beginning to fill with very ill people,” the news agency quoted Dr. Harris as warning.
“Across the European region we’re seeing an intense and indeed alarming increase in cases and deaths,” said the WHO’s spokeswoman.
She said daily cases rose by a third compared with the previous week, while daily deaths increased by nearly 40%.
Europe has recorded over 8.7 million cases since the outbreak while the total deaths related to the pandemic hit 254,131 during the same period.
At least 1,161,943 people worldwide have died from COVID-19 and over 43.7 have been infected by the pandemic which first appeared in Wuhan, China, in early December.
