Top Peace Official Returns to Afghanistan after Trip to Iran

Afghanistan’s top peace official, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, who chairs the High Council for National Reconciliation met with the neighboring country’s senior officials in the Iranian capital of Tehran on a two-day trip as part of efforts for peace and bilateral ties.

During his stay, he met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and other high-ranking Iranian officials.

The government’s top peace negotiator Abdullah Abdullah visited Pakistan and India earlier this month, as part of the efforts to seek region’s support for the Afghan peace process.

Afghanistan’s top peace negotiator, Abdullah Abdullah, paid a visit to Iranian officials to seek for cooperation with Afghanistan and to support its peace process to ensure sustainable stability in the south-Asian country and the region.  

Abdullah Reaffirmed Calls for Flexibility

Arriving to Tehran, the Chairman of High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah, said at an event held by country’s embassy in the capital Tehran that a dignified peace is what the Afghan nation seeks for.

Peace in Afghanistan has entered a critical phase, he added, reiterating for flexibility in the ongoing talks.

He reaffirmed his call for the Taliban to demonstrate flexibility.

Visiting Neighboring Country’s Officials

Bilateral ties and cooperation, the Afghan peace process, the progresses inside Afghanistan as well as in the peace talks going on in Doha have been of the most important takeaways from Dr. Abdullah’s visit with Iranian officials.

Following Abdullah’s meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Saeed Khatibzadeh, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman wrote on Twitter that “a prosperous, independent, developed, peaceful and stable Afghanistan is what Iran has always wanted. We will make every effort to contribute to genuine intra-Afghan talks.”

Afghanistan’s chief peace official Abdullah Abdullah met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the second day of his trip to Iran.

President Hassan Rouhani pledged Iran’s support for the Afghan peace. In the meeting, both sides discussed the intra-Afghan negotiations and bilateral relations.

President Rouhani also emphasized on the implementation of joint economic plans between the two countries.

Afghanistan-Iran Railway Station to Become Operational Soon

On the sidelines of his trip to Iran, Abdullah Abdullah told IRNA news agency that the launch of the Khaf-Herat railway is underway and the railway will be inaugurated soon.

Railway in all areas has a positive impact on both countries and can play an important role in the development of mines in the region, IRNA quoted him speaking to the news agency.

Peace Envoy Hailed Iran’s Role in Afghan Peace Process

On his last day trip to Iran, peace envoy Abdullah Abdullah appreciated Iran’s stance and important role in the Afghan peace process, saying that the neighboring country can play an important role to help advance peace process in Afghanistan.
