As the World Peace Day is being celebrated all over the world and inside the country, the Kabul-based UNAMA and EU missions have expressed deep concern over a surge in civilian casualties.
The UNAMA mission in Twitter thread urged all warring parties to “take immediate measures to protect them [civilians], and create conducive atmosphere for Doha peace talks.”
The UN mission has noted that the toll of civilian casualties, which is a “key indicator of conflict’s intensity,” is lower “than in recent years,” but its “preliminary findings show as many as 20 civilians killed and 39 injured—including women, boys and girls—in four separate incidents Saturday.”
The EU, likewise, voiced concern over a rise in civilian casualties, calling it “unprecedented”.
“On International Day of Peace and amidst promising Doha talks, the EU is deeply concerned about the surge in violence with unprecedented high numbers of civilian casualties,” the mission said in a tweet.
“We renew our call on the Taliban to stop the violence NOW and commit to a ceasefire as soon as possible,” it added.
