U.S. Special Envoy to Afghanistan Visits New Delhi

Following his trip in the Qatari capital Doha and Islamabad, the U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad met senior Indian officials to discuss the Afghan peace.

U.S. Special Envoy to Afghanistan Visits New Delhi

Mr. Khalilzad’s visit to India follows his trip to Doha, where he attended the Intra-Afghan talks opening ceremony, and then to Islamabad on Monday to hail the country for its important role it played in easing the start of peace talks between warring Afghan parties.

During his Delhi visit, Ambassador Khalilzad held meetings with India’s external affairs minister Dr. S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, according to a statement by U.S. Embassy to India, Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh V Shringla, Joint Secretary, Pakistan Afghanistan and Iran division in MEA JP Singh were also present in the meeting.

India and U.S. agreed, as per the statement, that the Afghan peace process should lead to a political roadmap and ceasefire.

“The United States and India share the view that the peace process must continue until there is agreement on a political roadmap and a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire. The Afghan sides should ensure their territory must not be used by any terrorist group against any other country,” read a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy.

Earlier on Monday, Mr. Khalilzad and his delegation met with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, and other senior officials to discuss the latest developments in intra-Afghan peace talks with Pakistani officials in addition to laud the role of Pakistan in facilitating the Afghan peace talks.
