The Afghan First Vice President Amrullah Saleh was targeted in Kabul on Wednesday, September 09, after which Mr. Saleh survived the attack, but some of his bodyguards were wounded.
The attack has drawn strong condemnation.
Sediq Sediqqi, Afghan president’s spokesperson, and the EU mission in Afghanistan condemned today’s attack on the VP Saleh, blaming the spoilers of peace and stability for being behind.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the reconciliation council also condemned the attack, and called it a weakness of the country’s sworn enemies.
In a tweet, the EU mission in Afghanistan condemned the attack as “cowardly”. “This is an attack on the Republic, & desperate act by spoilers of peace efforts, who must be collectively confronted,” it said.
The attack has also drawn strong condemnation from the Afghan National Security Council, NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative, and social media users as well as from across the political spectrum.
A blast took place today morning around 7:30am in Taimani area of the Afghan capital, said Ferdaws Faramarz, a spokesman for the provincial police chief, without releasing details on casualties.
The Afghan Ministry of Public Health put the toll of casualties to 14 killed or wounded.
A spokesman for the ministry, Noorullah Taraki, said two dead bodies and 12 injured were rushed to hospital.
Latest reports indicated a rise in casualties: at least 10 were pronounced dead and another 15, including VP Saleh’s bodyguards, injured, according to Tareq Arian, a spokesman for the ministry of interior.
It was an initial report on fatalities, said Mr. Arian, the toll of casualties was expected to rise.
No group or individual claimed responsibility for the attack.
