Afghan Politician, Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani, Sentenced on Federal Welfare Fraud Charge: SIGAR

On December 11 of the last year, U.S. Federal Court convicted Afghan former chairperson of IEC Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani to welfare fraud accusing him of receiving over $100,000 in government benefits by concealing foreign travel and residency between July 2015 and December 2018.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) announced in a press release that Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani, the former head of Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan has been sentenced to three years of probation and six of months of home confinement.

“Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction John F. Sopko announced today that Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani, a prominent Afghan politician for many decades, was sentenced Monday by a federal judge to three years of probation and six months of home confinement,” read the press release.

On December 11 of the last year, U.S. Federal Court convicted Afghan former chairperson of IEC Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani to welfare fraud accusing him of receiving over $100,000 in government benefits by concealing foreign travel and residency between July 2015 and December 2018.

According to the statement released by U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ahmad Yusuf Nooristani, former chairperson of Independent Election Commission (IEC) sentenced to 10 years in federal prison and paying up to $250,000 fine.

Mr. Nuristani admitted that he applied for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) from the Social Security Administration in July 2015.

Following the sentence, Mr. Nuristani agreed to make full restitution to the Social Security Administration and the California Department of Health Care Services.

Few times back on May 2019, he had been sentenced to 13 months in jail by ACJC due to plundering public money, but the Ministry of Interior has been failed to take him into custody.
