The High Council for National Reconciliation announced that according to the details of the agreement signed between President Ghani and his former political rival on May 17, the former Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah will chair the high peace council and will appoint the members of the council.
The peace council, however, said in a statement that the council should be national, comprehensive and all-inclusive, and in regard with this, consultations with leaders and various political and civil society members have already begun and are being finalized.
The chairman of reconciliation council, according to the statement, will consult with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani as well as political parties and leaders, Speakers of the Parliament (House of Representatives) and the Senate (House of Elders), civil society and country’s elites on the formation of the council.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at a decree on Saturday, August 29, formally appointed members of the High Council for National Reconciliation which is led by former Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.
Under the decree, Afghan political and religious figures, current and former government officials and women activists were appointed to be the members of the council. Among the members, seven were declared to be the deputies for the council.
Former President Hamid Karzai and the leader of Jamiat-e-Islami, Salahuddin Rabbani, were also announced to be members of the council, but they declined the appointment.
