On Sunday, at around 1:00am, armed assailants entered a restaurant-bar in Iguala where Mr. Morrugares and his bodyguard were dining and opened fire on them.
Pablo Morrugares is the fourth journalist murdered in Mexico this year, as per reports.
The motive for the murder was not immediately clear.
Mr. Morrugares ran the PM Noticias, an online publication based in the city of Iguala. The website also published an announcement about the killing on Facebook.
The south-American country of Mexico is said to be one of the dangerous places for journalists. According to media reports, at least 133 journalists have been killed since 2000 in the country.
