In a Twitter thread, Sediq Sediqqi, the presidential spokesperson said the Taliban’s recent attacks on Afghan forces, roadside bomb attacks as well as targeting government staff shatters hopes of the Afghan people and the international community for a sustainable peace in the country.

“Now is the time for the Taliban to end the violence and engage honestly in the [Afghan] peace process,” Mr. Siddiqi further said.

Responding to calls for a reduction in violence, Zabihullah Mujahed, a Taliban’s spokesperson, however, said the demand is “irrational” before the direct talks.

Mujahed highlighted the only real solution to the problems is the release of prisoners and the start of talks between Afghans.

Calls for reduction in violence comes as the Afghan National Security Council announced last week at least 23 civilians were killed another 45 wounded in the group’s attacks.
