The UK’s first sanctions for human rights abuses covers those behind the deaths of the Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, and the Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, as well as the systemic killings of the Rohingya population in Myanmar and the North Korean gulags, according to Mr. Raab, speaking to MPs.
The sanctions include visa bans and asset freezes, according to reports.
Prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2018 while Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer lost the battle for his life in prison in 2009, allegedly after being beaten.
Russia said it will take “retaliatory measures” in response to the sanctions, but Saudi Arabia didn’t immediately comment.
