Health authorities in Afghanistan have reported 759 cases of infection from the coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

Coronavirus cases in Afghanistan have jumped by nearly 759, another of its highest daily count, data by health officials indicated.

The total confirmed cases in the country stands at 16,509 as additional cases were recorded in the last 24 hours.

Presenting the latest statistics, as many as 1,450 patients having been contracted with the disease have recovered as additional 22 patients got better after the illness.

The ministry’s latest figures related to the pandemic, however, indicated that within the past 24 hours, five infected patient have died of the virus, taking the nationwide death toll to 270.

Kabul, the worst-hit part of the country, now has 6,478 total coronavirus cases as 266 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours; its death toll stands at 31.

Herat with 212 cases has the second highest number of infections after Kabul.

Other provinces having reported the new cases include Paktia (66) Balkh (39), Nangarhar (34), Baghlan (27), Bamyan (21), Khost (25), Faryab and Ghazni each (18), Takhar (17), Parwan (4), Kapisa (7), and Badakhshan (3).

Globally, more than 6.2 million coronavirus cases have been confirmed, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. At least 375,554 people have died, including more than 105,000 in the U.S.
