Afghanistan, U.S., Uzbekistan Hold Joint Virtual Conference, Discuss Extension of Ceasefire

The United States Under Secretary of State, David Hale, who co-chaired a joint video conference on Wednesday, discussed important mutual issues with the Afghan acting Foreign Minister Mohammed Haneef Atmar, and Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov.

The participants discussed deepening cooperation in advancing peace and ending the longest-running war in Afghanistan, the statement read.

The participants also welcomed a political settlement reached between the Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and the former Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah to form an inclusive Afghan government and to create a High Peace Council to move the peace process forward.

As a part of the meeting, all participants discussed the importance of an extended comprehensive ceasefire and the urgency of starting an intra-Afghan dialogue, the statement further added.

The armed Taliban announced a three-day ceasefire over Eid al-Fitr on Sunday which sparked welcomes from the Afghan government and the Afghan nation.

Following the announcement of ceasefire by the armed group, the Afghan government decided to release the group’s 2,000 inmates in response.
