After several months of a political feud stemmed from last year’s presidential elections, the Afghan President and his main electoral rival have agreed to end a prolonged political standoff and signed an agreement, Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the president tweeted.
According to the details of the agreement shared by media, the former Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah will chair the Afghanistan High Peace Council and a power-share of 50% of the cabinet, sources said.
As a part of the agreement, the peace negotiating team will give an account of the process to the High Peace Council.
Meanwhile, as a part of the agreement, Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum would be awarded with Marshal rank.
A technical team will also be formed to contain breaching the agreement by both sides, the agreement read.
In February of the ongoing year, Mr. Ashraf Ghani was declared the winner of the last year’s election, but his political foe, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah disputed the results, claiming widespread fraud.
Both men claimed the right to lead Afghanistan and even held simultaneous inaugurations in Kabul on March 9.
