Coronavirus: Increased Testing Capacity Announced by Afghan Health Ministry

May 09 (The Killid Group) —The Afghan health ministry announced today that it has increased its capabilities to test for the pandemic as it can carry out 2,000 coronavirus tests per day.

The Afghan ministry of public health urges greater financial supports from international partners to Afghanistan in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and scrambles to increase its PCR testing capacity.

Dr. Wahidullah Majroh, the deputy health minister said addressing to media on Saturday that testing laboratories will soon be inaugurated in Kunduz and seven other provinces.

According to him, Afghanistan has so far nine coronavirus testing laboratories that will be soon expanded to 15 more laboratories across the country.

A number of civil society activists, nonetheless, are confident that the ministry of public health doesn’t have the testing capacity needed and people must wait for a long time until they get tested and receive their results.

Abdulwadood Pedram, an activist in the civil society, maintained that a delay in testing the suspected coronavirus patients has been the main reason for increasing the infection cases in the country.

As of today, the health ministry has registered 4,033 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, 253 of which were diagnosed within the last 24 hours.

To date, at least 115 people have died of the dead-dealing virus as six new deaths were recorded within the last 24 hours, while at least 29 patients having been contracted with the illness have recovered over the past 24 hours, the latest data by the health ministry indicated.
