April 6 (The Killid Group) — Pakistan has opened Torkham and Chaman borders for four days from today to allow the Afghan refugees to leave Pakistan for their home country.
The border crossing will remain open till April 9 during which only one-way pedestrian movement will be allowed while cross-border transportation will remain suspended.
Pakistani media quoted the country’s foreign ministry spokesperson as saying in a statement that the decision was made on a special request of the Afghan government based on humanitarian considerations and to facilitate the Afghan nationals.
The statement further said that Pakistan, as a neighbor and in view of friendly bilateral ties, remains in abiding solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, particularly at a time the coronavirus pandemic continues spreading across the globe.
The borders were closed by Pakistan in order to control the spread of the novel virus last month.
But on March 20, Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan announced on his Twitter the opening of the Chaman-Spin Boldak border to Afghanistan for trucks to crossover to the other side.
“Despite global pandemic of COVID 19, we remain committed to supporting our Afghan brothers & sisters. I have given instructions to open the Chaman-Spinboldak border & let trucks crossover into Afghanistan. In time of crisis, we remain steadfast with Afghanistan,” PM Imran Khan tweeted on March 20.
