Afghan Government, Taliban Cooperation Needed to Help Millions at Risk from COVID-19

March 31 (The Killid Group) — The Human Rights Watch has urged the Afghan government and the Taliban for their cooperation to improve access to health care to fight COVID-19 in the country.

In a statement, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban to urgently work together with the United Nations and aid agencies to enhance access to health care for the millions of Afghans most at risk from COVID-19.

According to the statement, Afghanistan has the most vulnerable communities with the people who are mostly internally displaced and are from rural communities where access to health care is limited, so they are mostly at risk from the coronavirus pandemic.

“The spiraling COVID-19 crisis puts millions of Afghans at risk, yet Afghan officials are consumed with infighting and the Taliban with adversarial posturing,” said Patricia Gossman, associate Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

The Human Rights Watch has urged both the Afghan government and the Taliban to take measures and hold video conferences to combat the contagious COVID-19.

According to HRW, Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world, with an extremely weak public health infrastructure, and therefore, is at high risk from the novel coronavirus.

The HRW’s statement comes as the Afghan government and the Taliban have not reached an agreement to start the intra-Afghan peace talks and reduce violence.
