More Than 2 Million Trees to be Planted in Country
March 10 (The Killid Group) — Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, the Kabul Municipality and the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) said the country still lacks the culture of environmental conservation.
Nasir Ahmad Durrani, Minister of Agriculture Irrigation and Livestock, said on Tuesday at the National Tree Planting Day that more than two million trees are planted annually across the country, with only 60% percent being preserved.
He added, for a better climate and preventing groundwater droughts as well as groundwater depletion, the environment should be preserved.
Mr. Durrani further said that the droughts last year caused 72% of crops loss.
Ahmad Dazaki Sarfaraz, the mayor of Kabul, in the meantime, said that along with the new ideas to greening parks, the agency plans to provide employment opportunities in the next year and encourages the private sector to invest in the parks.
Meanwhile, Shah Zaman Maiwandi, head of the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), said a system has been created to check the situation of greenery and control of the trees.
At the presidential decree, the 20th day of the twelfth month in Hijri Shamsi calendar has been recognized as the National Tree Planting Day, and the Ministry of Agriculture said it will provide residents of the country with more than two million trees for free.
