U.S.-Taliban Peace Agreement Would be Signed in Presence of Pakistan

(TKG) As the United States and the Taliban agreed on a week reduction in violence all across Afghanistan, Pakistan reiterated that it has played a key role in the Afghan peace process, and that the U.S.-Taliban peace agreement would be signed in the presence of Pakistan.

At the time when reports indicated a number of violations by the Taliban during the week of reduction in violence, the commander of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission and United States Forces – Afghanistan, General Scott Miller, has reiterated that the Taliban must fulfill their commitments to reducing violence.

The Taliban, however, have recently said they are not thinking about seizing power, adding that war is not their choice.

According to a statement released by the Taliban on Sunday, February 23, “The responsibility of solving the issue of Afghanistan falls entirely on the shoulders of Afghanistan following the withdrawal of foreign forces.”

However, a number of Afghan politicians believed the Taliban aim to seize power through war.

Kabir Ranjbar, an Afghan politician, said to The Killid Radio that war is the habit of the Taliban, and legitimacy for that is given by people.

In the meantime, Khaled Saadat, an Afghan expert in international relations said that the Taliban have been thinking about forming an Islamic Emirate since the very beginning.

Nasir Ahmad Akhtarzai, a political expert, in addition, told The Killid Radio that Taliban approach has always been prominent in continuing the war, and Pakistan has a direct role in funding and equipping them

The seven-day reduction in violence began on Friday night, February 21, and if it went successful, the U.S.-Taliban agreement would be signed by the 29th of February.
