(TKG) – According to media reports, police in Azerbaijan detained opposition leaders and “rounded up would-be” protesters arriving at a Baku site to demonstrate against disputed election results.

Riot police in Azerbaijan detained dozens of protesters in front of the Baku headquarters of the central election commission on Sunday, February 16, reports added.

It was not immediately clear how many were still in police custody, reports further said.

The latest crackdown comes days after police violently removed protesters from the same location.

Prior to the crackdowns, on the afternoon of February 11, a few dozen protesters – including several of the defeated opposition candidates – gathered in front of the office of the Central Election Commission (CEC) in Baku for a sit-in.

According to media reports, the protesters demanded that the results of the parliamentary elections two days earlier be annulled after independent observers registered widespread cheating, including ballot-stuffing and multiple voting.
