(TKG) − U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday, February 11, in separate phone calls briefed President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on the ‘progress’ made in the U.S.-Taliban talks.
President Ghani yesterday tweeted on his page as saying, “Today, I was pleased to receive a call from @SecPompeo informing me of the notable progress made in the ongoing peace talks with the Taliban. The Secretary informed me about the Taliban’s proposal with regards to bringing a significant and enduring reduction in violence.”
He further tweeted, “This is a welcoming development and I am pleased that our principal position on peace thus far has begun to yield fruitful results. Our primary objective is to end the senseless bloodshed.”
President Ghani claimed that “the Afghan people stand with us with their full consensus,” adding that the Afghan government “will manage the next step.”
“The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will manage the next steps in a manner that positively supports the overall peace process and will report to the public,” he further wrote on his Twitter page.
U.S. Secretary Pompeo, moreover, talked to the Afghan government Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah for his constant cooperation and support for peace efforts, according to a statement released by the office of chief executive.
The statement further added, both sides talked about progress in peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban.
Mr. Pompeo said, he hopes that this development will provide a basis for signing of a bilateral agreement, the start of inter-Afghan negotiations and the achievement of long-lasting peace.
