KABUL – The American University of Afghanistan in a statement appealed for the release of Kevin King and Timothy Weeks, as it marked third anniversary of its two professors kidnapped in 2016.

United States citizen King, along with Australian national Weeks, were kidnapped shortly after leaving the university compound on Darulaman Road on the evening of August 7, 2016.

Since professors King and Weeks were taken hostage, the American University of Afghanistan community, our students, staff, faculty, administration, and Board of Trustees, have ceaselessly asked for their release, the statement said, as reported by local media.

King and Weeks belong back with their families and friends, the statement further said, adding that they came to Afghanistan to help educate Afghan students who are striving to build better lives for themselves, their families and their nation.

According to the statement, professors and students at universities represent the future of every country and that education should never be a target in any conflict.

“No purpose is served by holding these teachers. We continue our call for the immediate release of our beloved colleagues, teachers and friends, Kevin King and Timothy Weeks,” the statement added, as quoted by local media.
