[UNVERIFIED CONTENT] The recently restored Qala Ikhtyaruddin, in Herat, western Afghanistan, November 30, 2011. Some historians believe that Alexander the Great built a fortress on the site when he travelled through Afghanistan around 330 BC. The current walls, which date from around the 14th Century, were crumblng before the Aga Khan Trust for Culture began restoration work in 2008.

HERAT (The Killid) – Historical monuments at the Herat Museum are not safe due to lack of a standard building and administrative structures, officials said.

According to the officials at the museum, about three thousand monuments, six thousand years old, are held in the Citadel of Alexander in Herat (locally known as Qala Ikhtyaruddin); some have been exhibited.

Ali Ahmad Temouri, a professional member of the Herat Museum, said lack of a standard museum facilities and professional employees are the main challenges for preserving, as well as displaying historical works to public audience, which, according to him, could cause harm to historical pieces.

Last year 30,000 people, including foreign tourists, visited the museum inside the Citadel, he added,

According to Temouri, the museum needs at least three more professional employees in its administrative department based on the organizational structure.

He exclaimed the government has been notified of the challenges and limitations; but so far has not received any response.

Meanwhile, Head of the Ministry of Information and Culture Arya Rofyan admitted current facilities are of not best for the historical monuments.

He said its administration attempts to allocate a particular property and build a full geared facilities in order to preserve the historic and cultural values in the province.

While challenges at Herat Museum are discussed, the Herat Information and Culture directorate charges students AFN20 as entrance ticket to the museum, AFN50 for regular visitors, and 250 for foreign tourists visiting the historic place in western province of Afghanistan.
