KABUL – An unwanted grapple between the Afghan police and a number of inmates in Pul-e-Charkhi prison in Kabul left four prisoners dead and further 33 injured, Ministry of Interior Affairs said in a statement. Among the wounded are 20 policemen.
The clash started at around 4pm local time when the Afghan police started searching some cell phones of the prison, which is prohibited – an order from the authorities.
In the prisoners’ attack on police, 20 policemen sustained injuries and police started firing in the air to bring the situation under control, the ministry said, as local media reported.
Pul-e-Charkhi Prison (also the Afghan National Detention Facility) is the largest prison in Afghanistan. It holds up to 5,000 inmates and is located east of Kabul.
