Peace Efforts yet to Bear Fruits

While the United States and Afghan government pursue efforts seeking a political settlement to the 18-year war in country, people remained empty-handed whether negotiations will bear fruit after wrapping at least six round of talks on war-free Afghanistan.

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah in the Council of Ministers meeting Monday said “no major step has been taken on the peace process so far”, referring to recent efforts by the US and Afghan government, including the peace Jirga held amongst some 3,200 delegates nationwide.

“Unfortunately, the fighting is still ongoing during Ramadhan. We wanted a ceasefire during this month, but so far it’s not agreed,” Abdullah said as quoted by local media.

His remarks come as the Taliban refused to agree on a ceasefire at least during the Ramadan month – a call by the 3,200 delegates during the national assembly.

The 6th round of talks between the US and Taliban representatives in Doha were wrapped up last week with “steady but slow” progress on key issues under debate, including foreign troops withdrawal and counterterrorism assurance.

The next, marking the 7th round of talks between both parties are to be held in nearing future, according to sources.
