Nielsen of U.S. Security Chief Resigns

The United States Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, who enforced some of President Trump’s controversial border policies, has resigned after serving in the position for more than a year.

Nielsen in a tweet Sunday called it “an honor of a lifetime” to work in the department.

President Trump tweeted she would be temporarily replaced by Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan.

“…I am pleased to announce that Kevin McAleenan, the current U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, will become Acting Secretary for @DHSgov, said trump in a tweet. “I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job!”

Nielsen was responsible for implementing the proposed border wall and the separation of migrant families.

Although, she did not give reason for her withdrawal from the position, but said this was “the right time for me to step aside”, adding the US “is safer today than when I joined the Administration”.

The announcement she is leaving her post comes days after the president visited the southern border, BBC wrote.

Trump has recently threatened to shut the crossing, but has since backtracked and promised to give Mexico a year to stop drugs and migrants crossing into the US, according to BBC.
