PM Khan Switches Comment on ‘Interim Gov’t’

With a bit of twist, Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs covered the proposed interim government in Afghanistan by PM Khan, saying his comment was misinterpreted, leading to widespread criticism amongst Afghan politicians and high-ranking government officials.

“In his comments, the PM had referred to Pakistan’s model where elections are held under an interim government. The comments should not be misinterpreted to imply interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs,” Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The statement further added that Pakistan has no other interest in Afghanistan but to promote peace through an ‘Afghan owned’ and ‘Afghan led’ political process.

Earlier, Afghanistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Deputy Ambassador of Pakistan Shahbaz Hussain to Kabul, over the recent “reckless” remarks by Pakistani PM Imran Khan on an interim government in Afghanistan to break the deadlock over peace in the country.

Afghan government also called Atif Mashal, Afghanistan Ambassador to Islamabad to further discuss the matter, according to the statement.

It comes amid controversies where Khan proposed Tuesday an interim government as a possible solution to an apparent impasse on the current peace process in the country, which flooded criticism in social media objecting Khan for intervening Afghanistan’s internal affairs.
