Ghani Stresses Averting Civilian Causalities

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani expressing grief on civilian causalities said loss of civilians are the most tragic events of all times during a war, which pains me as much as victim’s families.

Speaking at the commemorating ceremony of Abdul Mazari’s 24th anniversary at Presidential Palace, Ghani said the Afghan security forces have never been the cause for increasing number of civilian causalities inflicted by terror attacks, rather they strived to prevent such a tragic.

Ghani said that he has ordered Afghan National Defense Security Forces to prevent any military operations that depict possible threat to civilian.

“I’ve ordered ANDSF to either abort or to wait-out a potential target if even a single civilian is present (at the scene),” Ghani tweeted. “Our security and defense forces are committed to the rules of war and engagement and they only provide proportionate response to any enemy attacks.”

It comes as civilian causalities during military operations have increased more recently in provinces such as Wardar, Laghman, Nangarhar and Ghazni, which raised concern among residents.

According to United Nations statistic released last month, meanwhile, about 3,804 Afghan civilian are killed during various incidents in the country, depicting 11 percent increase in 2018.
