Counterterrorism Requires ‘Sustained Global Response’: Mohib

National Security Advisor of Afghanistan Hamidullah Mohib at UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan stressed the need for global cooperation, saying “peace with Taliban would not mean an end to threat of global terrorism”.

It comes after Mohib arrived Monday in New York City to discuss Afghan security situations and politics at United Nations Security Council meeting on Afghanistan.

“Peace with the Taliban would not mean an end to the threat of global terrorism,” said Mohib. “…Afghan forces will remain committed to fighting terrorism but this responsibility does not belong solely to Afghanistan.”

Depicting to the 18-year war in the country and its achievements of the past Mohib added, “It is a long-term global threat which requires sustained global response. The Constitution must be respected, as well as the democratic state and elected government it constitutes,” he added, as local media quoted.

Mohib exclaimed that peace in the country is an eternal issue and only Afghan would decide on any agreement concerning peace and security in the country, adding the upcoming Grand Consultative Jirga (national assembly) will pave the way for Afghans from various layers, including young generations and women, to play role in the process.

“This will be followed by the third Kabul Process Conference, where we will be looking practically at implementing a post-peace plan,” said Mohib.

Mohib further added that Afghanistan is committed to lasting peace as they initiated talks with the Taliban. “Now it is up to the Taliban to prove their commitment. They have so far failed to seize opportunities for peace. Yet we stand ready to engage in direct talks,” he said.

Mohib called on Afghanistan’s international partners to see the country as a platform for regional and global cooperation; “not just for mutual economic benefit but also for shared objectives for peace and stability,” wrote local media.

Meanwhile, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Tadamichi Yamamoto emphasized on intra-Afghan dialogues, calling Taliban for a direct talk with Afghan government.

Yamamoto added that any right concerning women and their achievements in the past 18 year should be thoroughly considered.

United Nations will continue its cooperation with Afghan government, he added.
