President Donald Trump inked an order on Tuesday to create pentagon’s new Space Force as a sixth military branch, which marks the first in 72 years.
The new Space Force is cited as an effort to better organize and defend military’s vast operation in the space with a possible cost of $800 million over the next five years.
“America must be fully equipped to defend our vital interests. Our adversaries are training forces and developing technology to undermine our security in space, and they’re working very hard at that,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
“We’re investing in new space capabilities to project military power and safeguard our nation’s interests, especially when it comes to safety and defense,” Trump added.
It comes amid several international treaties’ controversial interdict against space militarism by countries. Washington’s decision to create its new Space Force for better facilitating military, however, was accompanied by Russia and China’s protests.
